Rules for the assignment of a .US domain name

(time rough for registration: 24 - 48 hours)

You can now register .US domain names with NetRegister. Registrations are accepted on a first come, first-served basis, so the sooner you start registering, the better your chance of success. A recent Harris Interactive Poll showed that more Americans are likely to choose the .US Internet address than .com. The poll results suggest that up to 68 million .US domains could be registered.

.US is "America's Internet Address." It is the official country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States and is open to United States consumers, businesses, government agencies and organizations (e.g., johnsmith.us, publicservice .us, mycompany.us). It is ideal if you couldn't register your chosen name in another domain, or if you just want to establish an American identity online. To register a .US domain you must comply with the Nexus requirement:
  1. A natural person (i) who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America or any of its possessions or territories, or (ii) whose primary place of domicile is in the United States of America or any of its possessions, or
  2. An entity or organization that is (i) incorporated within one of the fifty (50) U.S. states, the District of Columbia, or any of the United States possessions or territories or (ii) organized or otherwise constituted under the laws of a state of the United States of America, the District of Columbia or any of its possessions or territories, or
  3. An entity or organization (including a federal, state, or local government of the United States, or a political subdivision thereof) that has a bona fide presence in the United States.


  4. This U.S. Nexus Requirement is intended to ensure that only those individuals or organizations that have a substantive connection to the United States are permitted to register for .US domain names.
  • The Registry assign the domain names to the registrants, following the chronological order of the requests; it's very important to complete the Netregister's form online for register quickly a domain

  • May be registered by private individuals and companies around the world

  • An unlimited number of domains may be registered by the same Registrant (Owner of the domain)

  • Certain domain names are reserved

  • The Official Web Site is located at the URL: NeuStar Inc ; WhoIs database is located here: http://www.whois.us

  • The registration procedures ends only when the domain it is uploaded in the database of domain names (WhoIs database), which is called the Registry of the Assigned Names (RAN)

  • To name your domain you can use any letter, numbers between 0 and 9, and the symbol "-" (hyphen)

  • The name can neither start nor end with the character "-" (hyphen)

  • Minimum domain name length: 3 letters (excluding the extension)

  • Maximum domain name length: 63 letters (excluding extension)

  • There is no difference between small and capital letters

  • the following categories of names are also reserved:
    1. All numbers five digits and higher
    2. All numbers in the format five digits-four digits (zip codes)
    3. All telephone numbers including toll-free numbers
    4. Tagged domain names--all labels with hyphens in the third and fourth
      character positions (e.g. "bq--kn2n4h4b")
    5. There is a List of Reserved .US Names

  • Please note, the nameservers for .us domains must be physically located in the United States
